Kogi State has launched a major initiative to revitalise its livestock trade through the rehabilitation and upgrade of nine strategic livestock markets across the state. The project commenced at the Okumi Livestock Market in Lokoja, marking the start of construction works aimed at modernising market infrastructure and improving how livestock business is conducted.

State officials say the initiative underscores the government’s commitment to strengthening the livestock sector, improving security and creating a more organised trading environment. A safer and better structured market system is expected to attract increased commercial activity, generate employment and protect the livelihoods of farmers, traders and others who depend on livestock-related businesses.

Authorities have confirmed that all regulatory approvals and procurement processes have been completed, with construction already underway. The upgraded markets are scheduled for delivery within six to twelve months and will feature modern facilities, including veterinary services, water and sanitation infrastructure, security installations and solar-powered lighting. Community leaders and market associations have welcomed the project, which is expected to boost trade, enhance animal health standards and position Kogi State’s livestock industry for long-term growth.
